SPII, based in Johannesburg, is a not for profit research and policy analysis institute. Over the last few years we have undertaken a number of research programmes that have drawn together a number of similar institutions in the SADC sub region in partnerships to undertake regional research and advocacy initiatives. The main initiatives in this regard include the enquiry into access to socio-economic rights enjoyed by non-nationals in SADC, which was completed last year, and the Basic Needs Basket initiatives including the training that was undertaken in Namibia earlier this year. Both of these initiatives were supported by OSISA.
Currently we have agreed to host a final meeting with partners that participated in the Socio-Economic Rights project, at which the final report will be presented. SPII would however like to use this opportunity, knowing how busy each of your organisations are, to combine this meeting with a follow up meeting for the BNB research and network, and finally, to draw together interested organisations as experts to act as a reference team for the launch of a new project that we are undertaking that seeks to scope the feasibility of a SADC –wide Basic Income Grant funded by a tax on extractive industries, which is an initiative that we have spoken to a number of you about already.
Accordingly, we hereby invite you to a three day research meeting in Johannesburg between July 9 and 11 2012. The meeting will follow three discrete areas of work, to which participants are invited according to their areas of interest in on-going and future collaboration.
