A bushman returns to earth

On 30th June, 2012, Dawid Kruiper, the leader of the #Khomani San, was laid to rest in Andriesvale in the Kalahari. ‘Oupa Dawid’ was given a state funeral by the South African authorities in acknowledgement of his remarkable life and his work as a healer and leader of his people.

His funeral was attended by thousands of mourners. But while his spirit has passed on, his example will continue to inspire his people – and all who struggle in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds for justice and dignity – for generations to come.

This has largely been a function of the growing partisanship of benches. As presidents across the region have stacked the judiciary in their favour, judges have been only too happy to oblige the exectuve by putting on blinkers and sticking rigidly to a narrow interpretation of human rights. “Let the rest of the world expand the scope of human rights,” they seem to have been saying. “Here we can stop the march of progress.”

I never met Dawid Kruiper or ‘Oupa Dawid’ as he was universally known. Not in the flesh, at least. However, the legend of this great elder, healer and leader of his people was inescapable, so large did it loom. Today that spirit has passed on. But the example of Dawid Kruiper, leader of the #Khomani San, will continue to inspire his people – and all who struggle in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds for justice and dignity – for generations to come.

Great Lakes Monitoring Capacity Building Planning Workshop

This 1 day meeting in Geneva on July 6 aims to establish a Great Lakes Observatory to monitor gross human rights violations against the indigenous peoples of the region. The meeting will undertake a situation analysis of the human rights situation in the Great Lakes region: DRC, Rwanda and Burundi. It will also seek to better understand the UN Special Procedures mechanisms and discuss the practical implementation of monitoring capacity, including looking at the available resources and capacity for human rights monitoring and early warning systems.
