World Education, Inc. Bantwana Initiative

Early childhood development and education (ECDE) is a growing priority for the Government of Swaziland (GoS), but much remains to be done to uphold minimum standards of ECDE to improve the quality of ECDE education at National Care Points (NCPs) and community pre‐schools.

Improving Child Development Outcomes in Rural Swaziland is a project being implemented by the World Education, Inc. /Bantwana Initiative. Its focal point is to fill the immediate gap in trained in‐service teachers to enable them to adhere more closely to ECDE minimum standards; pilot a high‐quality, ECDE in‐service training package that can be scaled up and rolled across the country; and) sensitize and support communities to hold NCPs and preschools accountable to minimum ECDE standards. Importantly, the program will provide a platform for coordinated stakeholder dialogue with the aim of creating the commitment and momentum necessary to provide quality ECDE services in Swaziland. .

This project will involve the adaptation of the UNICEF formal pre‐service ECDE draft curriculum for use by current in‐service pre‐school teachers at NCPs and community pre‐schools, piloting the curriculum in 5 NCPs and 5 community pre‐schools as well as increasing community awareness of and advocacy for adherence to minimum ECDE standards and support to ECDE centers.
